Module 2 – Sustainability Science

Module Aim & Introduction

This module presents relevant topics related to Sustainability Science:  

  • Sustainable education; 
  • UN Sustainability development goals (SDGs); 
  • Greenhouse-gases (GHG); 
  • Climate Change; 
  • Sustainability Challenges. 

Through individual tasks, analysis, research and discovery, you will achieve specific skills, while also developing autonomy and responsibility, necessary for the qualification European Sustainability Expert (ESE). 

Definitions, explanations, and examples will be provided to you together with instructions on how to effectively use practical instruments and strategic documents to better master your roles and responsibilities as Sustainability Expert.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

  • Define the concepts of “Sustainable Education” and “Sustainability Education”
  • Recognize the main types and sources of greenhouse gases and their roles in the greenhouse effect.
  • Understand the carbon footprint and carbon credits
  • Understand the climate change
  • Recognize the current sustainability challenges

Skills

  • Explain the differences and similarities between the concepts of “Sustainable Education” and “Sustainability Education”
  • Express (indicative) curricular themes/areas that are relevant for Sustainable/Sustainability Education 
  • Analyse the 17 SDGs
  • Analyse the need for and justify the relevance of the 17 SDGs
  • Describe the features & functionality of the SDG Action Manager tool
  • Analyse the effect of the GHG
  • Acknowledge the envisaged climate targets

Autonomy & Responsibility

  • Demonstrate comprehension of the need for ‘taking action’ and efficiently use the SDG Action Manager tool
  • Evaluate and consider GHG reduction strategies 
  • Value the importance and applicability of the European Climate Law
  • Analyse the determinants of the sustainability challenges

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): a collection of 17 global goals adopted by the United Nations in 2015 to achieve a more sustainable, just, and prosperous future for all by 2030.

Greenhouse Gases (GHGs): gases in the atmosphere that trap heat and regulate the Earth’s temperature.

Carbon footprint: the total amount of greenhouse gases that are generated by the human actions.

Climate change: long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns.

Sustainability challenges: the complex obstacles that hinder the achievement of environmental, social, and economic well-being for both present and future generations.
