EU’s Sustainability Challenges
- The need to radically change the systems of production and consumption such as food, energy and mobility systems.
- The need to approach broader sustainability issues, such as social and economic ones.
- The need to change as well the consumption patterns, individual and collective behaviours and mentalities, without relying on the traditional policy responses or technologies alone.
- The need for strong coordination among the international community, and for global action.

The top challenges are:
- Biodiversity is declining across terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems in Europe due to persistent pressures driven by unsustainable production and consumption patterns, demonstrated most notably in the food system.
- Europe’s water resources are under severe pressure, with water stress affecting one third of Europe’s population and territory.
- The climate is changing at an alarming rate, threatening security, public health, ecosystems, infrastructure and the economy (Europe is the fastest-warming continent on the planet).
- As the “Europe’s Environment 2025” Report highlights, these top challenges call for a need to rethink the links between our economy and the natural environment, land, water and natural resources. Only by restoring the natural environment in Europe will it be possible to maintain a competitive economy and a high quality of life for European citizens.
