Module 1 – Introduction to business sustainability

This unit introduces the foundational concepts of business sustainability, contextualising the impact of climate change and the importance of sustainable practices for 21st-century enterprises. Participants will explore sustainable business models, resource consumption, biodiversity, and the role of sustainable communities in a green economy. 

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

  • Advanced knowledge on the key concepts of business sustainability and its triple bottom line benefits (social, environmental, economic). 
  • Advanced knowledge on the environmental impacts of corporate activities, including contributions to climate change and biodiversity loss. 
  • Advanced knowledge on the principles of the green economy and the role of sustainable communities in sustainability transitions. 
  • Advanced knowledge on sustainability-related international agreements, standards and frameworks (e.g. Paris Agreement). 
  • Advanced knowledge of the relationship between environmental risks and strategic corporate planning.

  • Evaluate business models through a sustainability lens, identifying strengths and weaknesses. 
  • Design corporate interventions aimed at reducing environmental impacts and carbon emissions.
